Jackson Lake Is Running Low This October. Here's What Still Works Before It Refills.

"Due to low reservoir levels, the boat ramp at Jackson Lake State Park will close for the season on 8/6/26. Hand-launched vessels will still be allowed."

That's the full entry for Jackson Lake in Colorado Parks and Wildlife's 2026 log of weather and drought closures. Two months later the line still reads "Ongoing." If you live in Wiggins and haven't driven up County Road 3 since summer, the lake you remember isn't the one waiting for you. Even so, the park's fall calendar is still running. In October the lake changes hands. Trailered boats are out. Paddlers, waterfowl hunters, stargazers and off-season campers are in, and the water is about to start coming back.

How a full lake got this low

Jackson Lake opened the 2026 boating season full. In May the Coloradoan reported that the reservoir "is naturally shallow and usually refills in the fall," and that Colorado Parks and Wildlife expected a low-water year, with water drawn as early as June. By Aug. 6, low reservoir levels had closed the boat ramp for the season.

It was that kind of summer across the state. Denver Water tracked an average daily high of 67 degrees for the first six months of 2026, against a recent-decades average of 62. CPW reported more fishing closures running at the same time than in any summer since 2002. The Colorado Sun's statewide recreation roundup, last updated Sept. 25, still lists Jackson Lake State Park under "mandatory low water closure."

Compared with other Front Range and plains reservoirs, Jackson Lake came through better than its "closed" label suggests. Barr Lake is closed to all boating for the rest of 2026, and that includes paddleboards. Boyd Lake shut down boating on June 28. At Jackson Lake, the closure covers the ramp. The lake itself is still open.

What the closed ramp leaves open

Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards can still go in. The aquatic nuisance species inspection station is closed for 2026. That matters less than it sounds, because craft that are both hand-launched and human-powered are exempt from mandatory inspection anyway. CPW still asks everyone to clean, drain and dry their gear. If you need an inspection for any other reason, the Visitor Center number is 970-645-2551.

One detail on the park page is worth taking seriously before you paddle out. CPW warns that rescue response is slower when the lake is low, because rescue boats are harder to launch. CPW also classifies most Colorado water as "cold water," meaning anything under 70 degrees, and October water fits that description. Wear the life jacket, not just pack it.

Shoreline Marina, at 970-645-2628, currently posts only its summer hours. Call before you count on it being open.

The October calendar, Saturday by Saturday

With motorboats off the water, the park's fall schedule fits around the weekends. So does the farm down the same county road in Wiggins.

Date At Jackson Lake Closer to home
Sat., Oct. 10 Youth, veteran and active-military waterfowl weekend opens; Star Party 7 to 11 p.m. Pope Farms open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sun., Oct. 11 Special waterfowl weekend continues Pope Farms open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sat., Oct. 17 Northeast Zone duck and coot season opens Pope Farms open
Sat., Oct. 24 Duck season underway Bicycle Adventure's Halloween Pumpkin Patch ride, 6 p.m., Wiggins Supers
Sat., Oct. 31 Light goose season opens Pope Farms' last Saturday
Sun., Nov. 1 Typical reservoir fill season begins Pope Farms' final day
Mon., Nov. 2 Dark goose season opens

The waterfowl dates above come from CPW's proposed 2026–27 season. Its January issue paper called them preliminary until the final federal frameworks came out. A second published transcription of the 2026 brochure lists the same windows, but check the final CPW Small Game and Waterfowl Brochure before opening morning.

Oct. 10 belongs to two crowds

The second Saturday of October has something on the schedule at both ends of the day. That Saturday, the Northeast Zone's special weekend for youth, veteran and active-military hunters opens, with regular-season bag limits for duck, coot and dark goose. After dark, the Northern Colorado Astro Society sets up telescopes at North View Campground, Site 241, for an informal star party from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Star Party is free with a park pass, and the organizers encourage red lights. To drive in, take the paved road past Pelican Campground and turn left on the dirt road before the Marina parking lot. To walk in, follow the lakeside trail from the Marina lot through Sandpiper and Fox Hill campgrounds. CPW's event page says both "registration is required" and "no registration required," so call the park at 970-645-2551 before you go.

Park rules keep the two groups apart. Hunting isn't allowed within 100 yards of designated campgrounds, trails or buildings.

Where hunting fits this fall

For anyone new to hunting the lake, it's governed by three different sets of rules:

  • Inside the state park: designated hunting areas are open seven days a week, and waterfowl hunters can set decoys along the shoreline and ponds.
  • Bureau of Reclamation land: open to hunting seven days a week. Park at the inlet, because the roads on the property are closed to the public.
  • Jackson Lake State Wildlife Area: access hours are 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. Waterfowl hunters check in and out, hunt only their reserved area and are limited to four per area. Reservations are required on weekends and holidays during teal season and the first split of regular duck season. Fishing on the SWA is closed from Oct. 1 through the end of dark goose season.

The dry year shows up here too. CPW's reservation page says the Jackson Lake SWA areas are all huntable, but irrigation water to the shallow wetland hunting properties has been shut off. CPW also advises hunters to scout ahead for adequate waterfowl habitat.

Camping after the showers close

Jackson Lake is open for camping year-round. From October through March, the Lakeside, Cove and Pelican campgrounds stay open. Shower houses and flush toilets close until the first weekend of April, and vault toilets are available in the meantime. You still need a reservation, and the maximum stay is 14 days in any 28-day period.

We couldn't confirm the current fire restriction status for Morgan County or the park. Colorado's Division of Fire Prevention and Control points people to the county sheriff, the local fire department or the land agency for current rules. Check before you pack firewood.

Fall farther down County Road 3

On weekends through Nov. 1, Pope Farms Corn Maize and Pumpkin Patch runs at 19502 County Road 3 outside Wiggins. It's open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with pick-your-own pumpkins, flower fields, hayrides, live music, a zipline, pumpkin cannons and fire pits after sundown. The park entrance is at 26363 County Road 3 in Orchard, farther along the same road. That makes it easy to pair a morning paddle with an afternoon at the maze.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Bicycle Adventure's Halloween Pumpkin Patch group ride leaves Wiggins Supers, 611 West Central Ave., at 6 p.m. Costumes are welcome. Bring lights and check the shop's signup first.

When the water starts coming back

Refilling runs on a schedule set by Colorado water rights. The Colorado Division of Water Resources describes the typical reservoir fill season as running from Nov. 1 through April 1. In its report, Jackson Reservoir's inlet diversion near the town of Masters was one of the main calls filling reservoirs on the South Platte in November, December and January, with water-right priorities dating from 1902 to 1922. On the calendar, Pope Farms' last day falls on the same day the fill season typically opens.

No official source we found gives a current lake level or says how much water will come back this winter, and CPW hasn't announced a date to reopen the ramp. The closure covers the 2026 season, and from November on, the inlet canal can start refilling the reservoir.

Water timing shapes more than the lake around here. If questions come up this winter about the wells, ditches or water rights tied to a property near Wiggins or Orchard, let's connect with Best Life Realty. We're glad to talk it through, in English or Spanish.
