“So… How’s the Market?”

If you’ve ever run into me at the grocery store, meeting, kids’ sporting event, or just out and about in town, chances are you’ve asked:

“So… how’s the market?”

And honestly? I love that question.

Not because there’s a one-size-fits-all answer—there isn’t—but because it’s a conversation starter. Even if you’re not in the market for anything, I always enjoy talking real estate & appreciate that you remember I’m an agent. On another note, it opens the door to understanding what’s really going on for you.

Here’s the truth most people don’t hear:

The market isn’t just one thing.

It’s not “good” or “bad.” It’s not the same for everyone. And it definitely doesn’t look identical across all price points, neighborhoods, or situations.

The Market Depends on You

When someone asks me how the market is, my first instinct isn’t to launch into stats or headlines. It’s to learn more about their perspective.

Because the market can feel very different depending on things like:

Are you buying or selling (or both)? 

What price range are you in?

Which area or neighborhood are we talking about?

Is your timeline flexible or time-sensitive?

Are you a first-time buyer, a move-up seller, or downsizing?

For example:

A seller in one price range might see multiple offers and quick sales.

A buyer in another range might have more options and room to negotiate.

One neighborhood might be moving fast, while another is taking its time.

All of those can exist at the same time within a 10-mile radius—and that’s normal.

Why I Like the Question

I like “How’s the market?” because it’s really another way of asking:

“Is now a smart time for me to buy/sell?”

“What should I be paying attention to?”

“What does this mean for my plans over the next 6 months, 12 months?”

Those are good questions. And they deserve thoughtful, honest answers—not soundbites or pressure.

Headlines vs. Real Life

National news and social media love big, dramatic market headlines. But real estate is local. And even more than that—it’s personal.

What matters most isn’t what the market is doing in general… It’s how it can affect your goals, your timing, and your comfort level. Sometimes the best move is action. Sometimes the best move is patience. And sometimes the best move is simply getting clarity so you know your options and decide what’s best for you.
